welding final

This is a rough picture, I will take a better one later after I fix it up a bit.
Welding is hard, but I learned so much in just a half-semester class.

self portrait

So I have massive amounts of work to do. I will be gone until dec. 8th, after everything is due.
But when I finish, I will have lots to post (hopefully!)

Until then, i did for drawing.
These are the studies I did before. I already posted them individually, but here they are again.

Drawing stuff

I have been really crunched on time lately. Final project deadlines and essays are looming, on top of thanksgiving and Harry Potter tonight! Plus concert on Sunday, I better get a move on. Here is some stuff I have been doing in drawing. Also, today in my concept studio one of my classmates was talking about some book called Drawing with the Right side of the Brains, I think its called. I hope to check that out in the future because I feel that I have gotten really lazy with keeping up with my drawing and sketchbook, etc.

These two are pieces we were supposed to do REALLY REALLY FAST!!!! I think that they turned out interesting, I will definitely try to focus on trying to draw in different ways and styles in the future.

These two studies are mixed media (powdered charcoal, graphite stick, and white conte crayon). They are reminiscent of another piece I posted in high school, and my final drawing will be a self portrait in this style. The pictures do not do the materials justice though. It's due on this coming tuesday, so I better get on it soon!

Light project

These are photos from a sculpture I created by hand cutting newsprint. The first photo is the piece of paper before it was folded, and the rest of the photos are after. Sorry for the confusion!

WELDING CLASS!

So this mini (half semester) I am taking WELDING.
What better place to take a welding class than the city of steel?
Its really cool, using all the machines and stuff, and I feel like I have already learned a lot. Yay for learning! Our class is working on stick welding, it is supposedly the most difficult of all welds but is the most basic and versatile. Its really intense, you have to wear the helmet and thick gloves and protective jacket and there are sparks flying everywhere and its so loud! I really enjoy it. I have done a bunch of smaller practice welds, but here is the first completed practice project. The next project we have due is our FINAL PROJECT! crazy!

Artist Book

This is the artist book I did for my concept class. It is definitely is based some on the one I did in precollege with the circles and shapes, but is much more clean cut. These are all the pages and they are in order.

Childhood Memory

Another project from my concept class-it had to be a sculpture on a childhood memory using objects directly relating to this memory. The memory I choose to focus on was of my mother's father, my papa, who lived in florida and owned a chocolate shop. My teacher made us put all of our projects on the floor and crawl around to view each other's work, it was pretty fun!

I ate the chocolates the next day:)

Things I will post in the future...

So, I have been so bad with keeping up with my work, but here is my checklist of things I hope to post soon.

Small book I made for Concept.
Another small project on childhood for concept.
Mixed Media bug project.
maybe some stuff from drawing, however most of it is not worthwhile...I'll do some rummaging.
random project through drawing when we had a guest artist come in from the UK and teach our class for the day, the assignment was "drawing with light", which mostly became just a project which incorporated light in some way.

College has been going GREAT! Here are some photos

Beautiful day in Pittsburgh for a football game. Even though our team stinks and we are D3, their is still a strong support for the scottish heritage here at Carnegie Mellon. The marching band goes all out with their kilts! CMU is also the only college in the US where one can major in bagpipes, I think. You can hear them playing around campus occasionally...

Me and some friends at the beginning of the school year, before we had homework!

Concept studio!

The last of my studio classes is concept. My prof. is the craziest guy ever, and he has been around forever. Concept is not media specific, and so far we have done things like sculpture, performance, and a lot of other random things. It is about the generation of ideas, so we talk about a lot of things like the city and our lives presently, memories, dreams, etc. Fun stuff, and it is pretty easy too because he focuses more on the concept rather than the final project. I am going to get a few more photos of work that can actually be documented, but for now here is a piece that I did that represents Dante's Inferno, the assignment was to trace shadows of ourselves to represent something from either Inferno, Purgatorio, or Paradiso. Cool stuff.

This is the shadow I did for the Inferno.

This is me and my shadow!

Mixed media

One of my classes (which just ended, it was only a mini) was 3D mixed media. One of the two projects assigned during the seven week period was to make a story in a box with objects. I did a performance under the alias Nancy, who was a middle aged lady who was married and lived a comfortable life financially but feels disconnected from the world, and tries to compensate by partaking in various hobbies, activities and classes. This was inspired by where I lived in Atlanta, where I saw many middle aged and older ladies who are financially very stable and live very comfortable lives but are often isolated, disconnected, and unhappy with their lives. I didn't record the performance, but here are some pics!

drawing class with prof. Clayton Merrell

We have been doing a bit of figure drawing in my drawing class, the majority of my classmates have not done or have limited figure drawing experience. I spent about a hour and a half on each, powdered charcoal and charcoal on both.
I need to start drawing more on my own, from observation, yeah...

His left arm is not out of proportion, it was actually like that.

long time no see

So I thought I was going to start a new blog, but I just missed this one so much!
I really missed blogging, and I should be documenting my work, and I should have more photos up soon it's just that my profs. have them, but I am BACK!
Carnegie Mellon has been great. It has been awesome. I love it. However, it is no RISD or MICA, and I have found that I really need to give myself the extra push to keep up with the pace in which I was creating work in high school. But college is SO MUCH FUN! Hopefully by keeping up with posting and documenting my work I will have a concentrated representation of what I have been doing.
What I have been doing here is a whole lot different than anything I expected. at CM, they really focus on contemporary art and I have been working in many different media (except painting:(
I will let the future posts do the explaining.

Love from Pittsburgh,
Lauren

misc.

So, I'm working on selling some of my pieces because I need money, and while contemplating all of the work I have done this year I remembered that I did this!

its made out of a single piece of string. It was an advertisement for our annual art show (Verve) for school on the big grey board outside the art room.
but we had to take it down, so all i have left now is this picture and my memories...

stuff

Here is some stuff that I have finished...

While the bright yellow ones definitely stray away from my concentration, i dunno. They are different and I like them.
